Education & Training

Dr. O’Reilly grew up in Alaska and began his pursuit of medical training with a strong foundation in science, earning his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, where he developed a lasting interest in reconstructive surgery and patient-centered care.

Following medical school, Dr. O’Reilly was commissioned in the US Navy Medical Corp and completed his General Surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Following a year serving overseas, he then pursued advanced specialty training in Plastic Surgery through a rigorous residency program at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. This combination of military and academic training shaped his disciplined, detail-oriented approach and laid the groundwork for his future leadership and surgical roles.

Career Highlights

Throughout his career, Dr. O’Reilly has held a number of influential academic and clinical positions. In his 20 year career as surgeon in the US Navy, he served as Department Head of Plastic Surgery and as the Consultant to the Surgeon General for Plastic Surgery, leading a team restoring form and function to US service members up to his retirement. Spending the majority of his time in San Diego, he also developed a keen eye and strong interest in cosmetic surgery. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he has held professor-level appointments at several respected institutions, reflecting his ongoing dedication to education and mentorship. In 2022, he was elected by his peers to serve as one of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons/Plastic Surgery Foundation Visiting Professors, lecturing across the United States and Canada on all things Plastic Surgery.

Dr. O’Reilly has also participated in multiple overseas deployments and global surgical missions operating in over 10 foreign countries, including work with Pacific Partnership aboard the USNS Mercy. During these missions, he provided reconstructive care such as burn, cleft lip, and palate surgery, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in resource-limited settings.
